What is it?
America’s Electric Cooperatives PAC is the federal Political Action Committee (PAC) of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). Montana’s Electric Cooperatives PAC is the state PAC.
What is a Political Action Committee (PAC)?
A political action committee (PAC) is a group of people with common goals who pool their money in order to financially support candidates running for elected office. A PAC supports political candidates who represent the interests and views of its members.
Why was America’s Electric Cooperatives PAC organized?
Rural electric system employees and consumers need representatives in Congress and the Montana Legislature who understand the important issues affecting rural electric cooperatives and who will fight for rural electric cooperative consumers. Both PACS were organized to support only the political candidates—incumbents and new candidates—who will speak for and protect the interests of electric cooperative systems nationwide.
What are the levels of contributions?
America’s Electric Cooperatives PAC is a uniquely structured PAC funded with individual contributions ranging from $25 per year to $500 per year. The membership recognition levels are:
Regular Membership: $25 per year
Century Club Membership: $100 per year
President’s Club Membership: $500 per year
Also, unique to Montana is Montana’s Electric Cooperatives PAC. The contribution is $12 per year. This money is dedicated only to Montana candidates and does not reach the national level. Most people who join the Montana PAC are also National PAC members and make a combined contribution of $37 per year for a regular membership.
Where does my Contribution Go?
With the exception of a small federal tax payment of less than 1%, all of your contribution goes directly to the campaigns of candidates who support the electric cooperative program.
Are Contributions to the PAC Tax Deductible?
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has ruled that political contributions such as those to ACRE are not tax deductible.
What do I Receive for my Contribution?
The most important benefit that you receive as a Montana’s Electric Cooperatives PAC member is a voice in helping elect state and federal officials that will support your cooperative and your community.
