Description of Event

Understanding Myself as a Team (Crew) Leader
• Understand what it takes to be successful as a foreman. Utilize research gathered across NWPPA from all levels, from operations to management. Compare that to what the participants discuss and discover in class.
• Understand own preferences for working and how this impacts communication and decision-making using MBTI. Raise the idea of diversity in style, thinking and acting when determining the leadership needs of the crew.
• Understand the role of Values and how we rely on them in decision-making. Have candid conversations about where actions and proposed values might be at odds.
• Develop leadership skills using scenarios that are ‘real life’ situations. Practice. Discuss. Repeat. The participants learn from each other in how they might respond to everyday situations and challenges, particularly in the ‘buddy to boss’ learning curve.
• Bring safety to the top of mind. How does it work when near misses impact the ‘keep it in the truck’ mentality? Create an opportunity for real discussions about
ensuring everyone goes home safely. Confidentiality allows for discussion without repercussion.
• Use experiential learning activities (the Operations Triathlon) to build a crew, plan an activity, complete a tailboard, utilize best skills, compete, and debrief. Bring the activities back to how they relate to real work in the Foreman role.
• Hear from other successful leaders (Ops manager or GM) about their success as a leader. Provide another perspective about what utilities need from Foremen and the part they play in shaping the culture of the organization.
• Utilize a local team development activity to practice skills in a safe environment. This brings home all learning and references back to the job.
